How to Make Business Deductions Out of Your Personal Expenses Part 1

This series will show you how to take your everyday expenses and take them as business deductions. Why do this? It is a sad truth that salary is taxed heavily. If you can shift your expenses into business expenses then you can reduce the amount of salary that you will be taxed on. This also shifts your expenses to the business. This lowers the amount of net income in the business. These two things combined can save you a large amount of money on your taxes every year.

Most tax professionals only have a small group of tax deductions that they use over and over again. This is due to the fact that they generally work more with individuals then with businesses. Most clients go into their tax professional’s office and ask him/her to save them more money by taking more deductions. The problem is that all they have is this small pool of deductions to choose from. So they start to push the envelope on the basic deductions. Your goal should instead be to take as many different deductions as possible. This will lead to the least amount of money given away in taxes. Many times expenses can be broken down different ways some of which have better tax saving properties.

Before we get ahead of ourselves with specific deductions, it is important to get down the basics. The first thing to do is to make sure that you work out of an operating account. This is where you should pay for all of your everyday expenses. Get a corporate credit card and cut back on spending cash. This is because cash is harder to track and therefore makes it tough to take deductions. This does not mean that you should increase the amount of spending that you do. This would absolutely go against any wealth building strategy. Pay your bill off every month and use the card as a simple means to keep track of your expenses.
