How to Make Business Deductions Out of Your Personal Expenses Part 3

Refrigerator

Large corporations with offices have a corporate fridge for their employees. Even with a home office you are still entitled to this. This does not mean that you have to go out and get a separate refrigerator for the office. Simply take one shelf on your family fridge and dedicate it to the office. You can put snacks and refreshments on this shelf. These snacks can then also be written off. This of course does not mean that you can go out and write off all of your family’s groceries. Limit it to 10 or 15 dollars per shopping trip.

Supper Money

Often times large companies will need their employees to stay and work late in order to meet a deadline. When this happens the boss will often buy his employees dinner. This is written off as a business deduction. You too can do this from your home. If one night you work through dinner you can pay for it with what is called supper money. The general guideline is to do this no more than 3 or 4 times a month with dinners costing anywhere from 25 to 30 dollars.

Meals and Entertainment

Business meals can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There are a few rules to qualify a business meal though. If a single person or married couple go out for a meal it is considered personal. Yet if two couples or a two single people go out and discuss business then it can be considered a business meal. This means that 50 percent of the cost of the meal can be written off. Also, if colleagues are invited to your home and business is discussed then the cost of that meal is also deductible. If not abused this can be a great way to save a few dollars.

The next part of the series will discuss two more deductions that you can take to save tons of money on taxes.
